The Basics: What is Wicker?

Wicker is a general term that defines a technique of weaving natural materials into beautiful furniture and accents but isn't a specific material in and of itself.

The wicker style encompasses any furniture that is woven from synthetic or natural hard fibers such as rattan, bamboo, seagrass, and more. Its sturdy construction, light weight, and stylish versatility make it an ideal choice for outdoor patios and indoor living spaces alike.

Wicker vs. Rattan: What's the Difference?

It can be a bit confusing when you see the terms "wicker" and "rattan" used interchangeably. As noted above, wicker is more the style of furniture, while rattan is an actual material.

Rattan is actually a group of plants, which includes more than 600 prolific, fibrous plant species that grow in a number of ways, from shrubs to climbing vines. Reed

Reed is the thin, flexible material inside the rattan core. Most often used for basket weaving, it may also function as an ornamental element in wicker furniture. Unlike cane, it has no natural finish and readily accepts paint or stain.

Bamboo

Closely resembling, and often mistaken for rattan, bamboo has a solid core and distinguishing ridges where the leaves were attached. In contrast, rattan is hollow with leaf nodes that are not as pronounced as bamboo.

While both rattan and bamboo wicker furniture are stable, rattan's density can make it a more long-lasting choice. Unlike rattan, bamboo grows in straight shoots, which can limit its use to more linear applications, but its rapid growth makes it a highly sustainable choice for furniture and other products.

Willow

Made popular in 19th century England, willow or twig wicker furniture is still crafted today, although the supple branches are now most often used in basketry. Willow can be soaked for flexibility and woven or bent to form graceful, rounded shapes.

Seagrass

The term seagrass is used for a variety of flowering plants, such as water hyacinth, that grow in shallow coastal waters. Seagrasses are not related to seaweed but are more closely akin to the lily. 1. Framing

Caring for Your Pier 1 Wicker Furniture

Because many wicker products are made from natural materials, exposure to the elements is not recommended (except for all-weather wicker). Moisture and sunlight can cause damage to rattan and other wicker materials over time. Enjoy your wicker furniture indoors or in a covered outdoor environment for longevity.

Vacuum regularly to remove dust. Occasionally clean with a wood cleaner to remove grime and retain natural luster.

On dark wicker, use a furniture polish containing a matching stain.

If furniture is exposed to moisture and develops mildew, simply wipe the affected area with ¼ cup bleach added to 1 quart of water. Test first on an inconspicuous spot as this solution may lighten the rattan's color slightly. Rinse with a wet cloth and allow to dry completely. When using this method, be sure to take the item outdoors and wear protective goggles, gloves with cuffs, and old clothing.
